MÜNCH ENERGY

Large-Scale Energy Storage in Saxony-Anhalt for a Flexible and Secure Energy System

Referenz Münch Energie

The two large-scale battery storage facilities operated by Münch Energie in Saxony-Anhalt expand the available storage capacity for a more flexible and increasingly renewable energy system. Each facility has a capacity of just under 50 MW and approximately 100 MWh of storage capacity. Together, the two battery storage facilities can store approximately 200 MWh of electrical energy and feed it back into the power grid as needed. According to Münch Energie, the combined storage capacity ranks among the largest of its kind in Germany.

Large-scale battery storage systems play a key role in balancing electricity generation and consumption. These storage systems can quickly absorb excess electrical energy and make it available again at a later time. This enables the systems to respond quickly and flexibly to changes in the power grid.

In collaboration with enspired and Entelios, this flexibility is marketed across multiple markets. The storage facilities are intelligently deployed in multi-market optimization (day-ahead and intraday) as well as in the balancing market. This allows the available storage capacity to be used in a targeted manner, depending on market and system conditions, to combine economically attractive applications with the requirements of a flexible power system.

The facility thus serves as an example of the role that large-scale battery storage systems can play in the energy transition. As electricity generation from wind and solar energy increases, so does the need to balance out the time differences between generation and consumption. The combination of high-performance storage technology and smart market management makes the two facilities flexible building blocks for the integration of renewable energy, supply reliability, and a more stable power system.
